W.B. Yeats and the End of the World
This article explores the connection between current ideas of ecological apocalypse and cultural form. The philosopher Timothy Morton argues that certain late modernist forms are more amenable to the imaginative representation of what he calls hyperobjects (especially, the hyperobject of global warming). However, through a consideration of Yeats’s formal choices when he faced his own apocalypse, we can broaden our ideas of viable cultural responses for our own moment. According to Barry Shiels, Yeats stands at the beginning of twentieth-century world literature idiom that draws on a expansive range of global cultural contexts: his “global poetry” enables to take on the theme of the globe’s end. Particularly, Yeats’s lifelong use of rhyme indicates that older traditions offer feasible artistic responses, beyond the protocols of late modernism
Persistence and Anti-persistence: Theory and Software
Persistent and anti-persistent time series processes show what is called hyperbolic decay. Such series play an important role in the study of many diverse areas such as geophysics and financial economics. They are also of theoretical interest. Fractional Gaussian noise (FGN) and fractionally-differeneced white noise are two widely known examples of time series models with hyperbolic decay. New closed form expressions are obtained for the spectral density functions of these models. Two lesser known time series models exhibiting hyperbolic decay are introduced and their basic properties are derived. A new algorithm for approximate likelihood estimation of the models using frequency domain methods is derived and implemented in R. The issue of mean estimation and multimodality in time series, particularly in the simple case of one short memory component and one hyperbolic component is discussed. Methods for visualizing bimodal surfaces are discussed. The exact prediction variance is derived for any model that admits an autocovariance function and integrated (inverse-differenced) by integer d. A new software package in R, arfima, for exact simulation, estimation, and forecasting of mixed short-memory and hyperbolic decay time series. This package has a wider functionality and increased reliability over other software that is available in R and elsewhere

Comparison of Properties and Bead Geometry in MIG and CMT Single Layer Samples for WAAM Applications
The process of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) utilizes arc welding technology to fabricate metallic components by depositing material in a selective layered fashion. Several welding processes exist that can achieve this layered deposition strategy. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) derived processes are commonly favored for their high deposition rates (1–4 kg/h) and minimal torch reorientation required during deposition. A range of GMAW processes are available; all of which have different material transfer modes and thermal energy input ranges and the resultant metallic structures formed from these processes can vary in their mechanical properties and morphology. This work will investigate single-layer deposition and vary the process parameters and process mode to observe responses in mechanical properties, bead geometry and deposition rate. The process modes selected for this study were GMAW derived process of Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Cold Metal Transfer (CMT). Characterization of parameter sets revealed relationships between torch travel speeds, wire feed speeds and the specimen properties and proportions. Differences were observed in the cross-sectional bead geometry and deposition rates when comparing MIG and CMT samples though the influence of process mode on mechanical properties was less significant compared to process parameter selection

A JavaScript API for the Ice Sheet System Model: towards on online interactive model for the Cryosphere Community
Abstract. Earth System Models (ESMs) are becoming increasingly complex, requiring extensive knowledge and experience to deploy and use in an efficient manner. They run on high-performance architectures that are significantly different from the everyday environments that scientists use to pre and post-process results (i.e. MATLAB, Python). This results in models that are hard to use for non specialists, and that are increasingly specific in their application. It also makes them relatively inaccessible to the wider science community, not to mention to the general public. Here, we present a new software/model paradigm that attempts to bridge the gap between the science community and the complexity of ESMs, by developing a new JavaScript Application Program Interface (API) for the Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM). The aforementioned API allows Cryosphere Scientists to run ISSM on the client-side of a webpage, within the JavaScript environment. When combined with a Web server running ISSM (using a Python API), it enables the serving of ISSM computations in an easy and straightforward way. The deep integration and similarities between all the APIs in ISSM (MATLAB, Python, and now JavaScript) significantly shortens and simplifies the turnaround of state-of-the-art science runs and their use by the larger community.
